Timestalker – A Romance Epic, Alice Lowe Style
Written by Zoe Crombie
Modern Britain is nearly universally lauded for, if nothing else, its comedies. Emerging from this tradition in the early 00s was a group of fresh, eclectic faces who did everything from the blackest comedies (Snuff Box, anyone?) to children's sketch shows. Chief among the pack is Alice Lowe, a consistent presence throughout the decades whose turn to directing in recent years has led to some novel approaches from something that was lacking in the noughties comedy boom: an unapologetically female point of view.
Following up her horror comedy Prevenge, Lowe's sophomore project Timestalker is one woman's journey through the ages, her bad breakups with a reincarnated love remaining the only constant in an ever-changing world. Surely drawing on her experience in the beloved Horrible Histories for the film's sense of period humour, Lowe shines in the central role, proving that even as we evolve as a species, we don't necessarily become any wiser. For this task, Lowe brings in some well-loved British talent in her supporting cast, with the Cornetto Trilogy's Nick Frost, Game of Thrones' Jacob Anderson and Sex Education's Tanya Reynolds each making appearances.
A must-see for fans of shows like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd, Timestalker is yet another showcase for Lowe's many talents as a solo artist beyond the confines of the comedy troup.
Catch Timestalker between the 1st and 7th November.
