International Women’s Month Season: Your Guide

With so many incredible new films by and about women, it’s impossible to fit them all into one day. That’s why the Dukes is bringing you International Women’s Month! From Oscar nominees, to beloved classics, to incredible new writing, here’s your full guide to the season. 

Hamnet

Chloé Zhao’s multi-award-winner returns to the Dukes for a victory lap. Agnes (Oscar winner Jessie Buckley), a woman at one with nature, falls in love with the world’s greatest playwright. The film follows their love, their joy, and their greatest tragedy. 

When: 27-29 March.

Wuthering Heights

Emily Brontë’s novel is re-imagined in Emerald Fennell’s fantastical erotic fever dream. Cathy and Heathcliff share an eternal love – but everything changes when the Lintons move in next door.

When: 15-24 March.

The Testament of Ann Lee

A musical drama about Manchester-born Ann Lee (Amanda Seyfried), leader of the Shaking Quakers. Through the unconventional practice of worship through movement, her legacy is forged.

When: 24-26 March.

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You

Oscar nominee Rose Byrne stars in this darkly comic psychological drama. Linda tries to keep control of her overwhelming life but is pushed to the brink by the less-than-helpful people around her. 

When: 24-26 March.

The Bride!

So far, we’ve got Jessie Buckley, a Gothic classic, song and dance, and a tale of female rage. How about a monster-mash of all the above?

In Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein-inspired story, Ida is raised from the dead to be Frank’s companion. But resurrected monsters don’t tend to do as they’re told.

Sound of Falling

A stunning film about four generations of girls who live in the same farmhouse in Germany. Past and present meld together as historical trauma lingers. Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes.

When: 27-29 March.

All About Eve

The classic film starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. An aging Broadway star is faced with her biggest competition yet: a scathingly ambitious ingénue named Eve.

When: 27 & 29 March.

The Chronology of Water

Kristen Stewart’s hard-hitting directorial debut, based on the memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch. A swimmer’s life plays out in fragments as she attempts to process her past through writing.

When: 27-29 March.

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain

Oscar-nominated animation based on the novel by Amélie Nothomb. Little Amélie sees everything and understands nothing – but the brilliance of life unfolds around her in vivid colour.

When: 28 March-2 April.
