A German farmhouse forms the backdrop for this Cannes Jury Prize-winning portrait of adolescence drawn from the experiences of four girls over the course of a century.
Writer-director Mascha Schilinski gives a poetic sweep to events as she moves fluidly across time, between glimpses at Alma (Hanna Heckt) in the early 20th century, Erika (Lea Drinda) during the Second World War, Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) in the 1980s and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) in the present day. A deeply-felt consideration of resilience and selfhood in the face of hardship that sees sense memory echo down the generations.
