Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – Another Masterpiece from Miller
Written by Zoe Crombie
We tend to associate certain directors with certain genres, fairly or unfairly: Martin Scorsese will forever be known for gangster movies, Michael Mann for high octane action, and Sofia Coppola for quiet dramas centring young women. But some directors have managed to avoid such neat categorisation from viewers and critics: enter George Miller, the man who somehow made both Mad Max: Fury Road and Happy Feet within the span of a single decade. And yet, practically every film of his has been a success, whether he’s crafting bizarre BDSM action in Beyond Thunderdome or guiding a talking pig through a metropolis in Babe: Pig in the City.
Fortunately, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga continues this trend, serving as a satisfying prequel that achieves the rare feat of adding further depth to its predecessor on repeat viewings. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular action hero, filling the enormous shoes left by Charlize Theron, Miller once again takes us to the decimated desert landscape of a post-apocalyptic Australia, this time to experience the brutality of both the world itself and of new villain Dementus, played with campy aplomb by Chris Hemsworth.
Watching this new release on the big screen is a no brainer for anyone who appreciates the artistry of Fury Road, or if you simply enjoy a well-crafted action movie full of exploding cars and mid-air hijinks. But while you’re watching, remember: this is the work of a man who once received an Oscar for dancing penguins.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga runs from 14th - 20th June
