The Phoenician Scheme – An Espionage Thriller, Anderson Style

Written by Dr. Zoe Crombie

Even if you aren’t a fan of his intensely constructed creations, there’s no denying that Wes Anderson is one of the most consistent filmmakers in living memory. Having released an average of a feature film every two years for the last two decade, all to critical acclaim, it’s easy to assume he’s putting out the same movie year after year. But under closer inspection, this can’t be further from the truth – you just need to ask a fan their favourite and hear the endlessly diverse range of answers to understand this (for the record, mine will always be Moonrise Kingdom).

Filtering the classic cinematic subject of an espionage adventure through his unique lens in his latest creation, Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme takes another trip back to the mid 20th century after the Area 51 camp of 2023’s Asteroid City. You can expect to see regulars of the Anderson actors stable like Scarlett Johannson and Bill Murray alongside a handful of newcomers, including an exceptionally well-matched Michael Cera and the film’s unmistakeable breakout star Mia Threapleton. Even with leading man Benicio del Toro allegedly in every shot, it’s yet another evolution in the director’s impressive ability to establish an ensemble.

Crafting a world as eccentric and elaborate as that seen in works like The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Phoenician Scheme is one of Anderson’s most kinetic features, and not to be missed on cinema screens.

You can see The Phoenician Scheme from Friday 6th to Thursday 19th June.
