Ocean with David Attenborough – Attenborough’s Oceanic Odyssey

Written by Dr. Zoe Crombie
David Attenborough is 99 years old. He has, without exaggeration, seen empires rise and fall, experienced technological innovations that could only have been dreamed of in his birth year, and appeared on British screens for over seven decades. It seems as though his later years are, somehow, his most popular; admiration for the broadcaster is ubiquitous, and series for streaming services like Our Planet and its sequel have ensured that younger generations are aware of his influence and message.
Ocean with David Attenborough is the rare opportunity to see his spectacular yet understated brand of nature documentary on the big screen. With a narrative that connects his own lifetime to a century of deep-sea discoveries, the film features the mesmerising visuals viewers have come to associate with Attenborough’s seal of quality, contrasting beauty with shocking moments of human-inflicted ruination.
Though, like most of his recent work, Ocean comes with a sting of tragedy, all hope is not lost. At nearly a century old, despite all the natural devastation he has witnessed, David Attenborough still has faith, and he passes it onto us in this beautiful ode to our world’s greatest resource in the fight against climate catastrophe.
