Kinds of Kindness – A Lanthimos-Tinged Actors Showcase

Written by Zoe Crombie

Surely, the best gig to land as a film actor is as the regular collaborator – practically the muse – of an acclaimed director. Not only do you have job security and the chance for a regular stream of awards nominations, but you also become a louder voice in the artistic process, contributing fresh ideas and perspectives as well as your performance. We’ve seen fruitful partnerships like these from Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart, Scorsese and De Niro, and most recently from Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, who having achieved monumental success through The Favourite and Poor Things have recently cemented their working relationship with their latest release Kinds of Kindness.

However, though Stone is a key element of the film’s identity, Kinds of Kindness is an anthology film with three distinct parts that gives plenty of time to its many collaborators. This wealth of talent includes, but is not limited to, other Lanthimos mainstays like Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley as well as rising stars like Hunter Schafer and Hong Chau. With each actor playing multiple parts across the three bizarre segments of the film, there’s plenty of space for them to flex their acting chops in a dark, unsettling world that only could have come from Lanthimos.

Kinds of Kindness is a return to Lanthimos’ darker, more absurdist roots following the relative optimism of Poor Things, but draws from a similar well of artists to great effect – building creative relationships is a talent, and in this area, Lanthimos is a virtuoso.

Kinds of Kindness runs from 19th July - 1st August.
