Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive – Dream On, David

Written by Dr. Zoe Crombie
On January 16th, the film loving community felt the devastating loss of David Lynch, one of its shining lights for nearly half a century. His filmography stands as both a testament to the emotional and spiritual potency of experimental cinema and a hugely empathetic body of work close to the hearts of many cinephiles – put simply, I doubt I’d have a PhD in Film today if it weren’t for movies like Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
In memory of Lynch and his immeasurable impact on cinema, we’ll be screening two defining dreamscapes of his career: his debut Eraserhead, and Mulholland Drive, which many deem his magnum opus. Both deal in surrealism, the first through a postapocalyptic world and a nightmarish nuclear family and the second via a vision of Hollywood only slightly stranger than the place itself. It’s also fair to say that both are, despite being aesthetically poles apart, the films that best represent Lynch, in all his hilarious, disturbing, cosmic glory.
There will never be another Lynch, but because of him we can be grateful for a million new voices in cinema who carry his weird, wonderful torch through the darkness. It hurt to write this blog, but knowing that his films will go on screening in cinemas like the Dukes for years to come is the best comfort we could hope for.
