BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE - Marley Gets the Biopic Treatment
However you feel about it as a representation of the life of Freddie Mercury, there’s no denying that Bohemian Rhapsody opened the floodgates for a tidal wave of biopics centred around the lives of legendary music stars. It’s hard to think of a big name (male) musician from the 20th century who hasn’t received this treatment, or who isn’t receiving it in due course – even The Beatles are getting individual biopics from Sam Mendes that tangle together at various points of their lives.
Once such artist is the iconic Bob Marley, a virtuoso songwriter who, like Freddie, Elvis, and half of the Beatles was taken well before his time. His turn in Bob Marley: One Love doesn’t linger on tragedy, however – instead, it serves as a celebration of the joy that Marley brought to millions, and continues to bring, through the legacy of his upbeat yet poignant music. Brought to life by Kingsley Ben-Adir in a story told by Best Picture nominated King Richard filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green, One Love doesn’t shy away from the darker parts of Marley’s life, but ensures that his positivity shines through.
If you were waiting on Marley to receive a biopic, or were simply curious about the background of the ‘Three Little Birds’ singer Bob Marley: One Love is a solid flick that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but that stands as a loving and thoughtful tribute to its subject.
