In February this year BBC Radio 4 broadcast Jenn Ashworth’s five-part story, set in the near future on the shifting sands of Morecambe Bay, where old stories of the ‘white lady’ searching for her lost child face new realities of a changing climate. It was read by Julie Hesmondhaigh, best known as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, and for her roles in in Broadchurch, Mr Bates versus The Post Office and Happy Valley.
At Litfest we were so taken by the story that we decided to publish it in a special edition so that everyone would have the chance to read this brilliant example of Jenn's work.
Come and join us to celebrate the publication of The White Lady of Morecambe, to hear about the origins of the story, the challenges of writing to commission, the creative tension between the demands of the story itself and the those of a radio serial, and to hear Jenn read from her story.
Jenn Ashworth is a writer based in the north-west of England, writing short fiction, memoir and novels, and teaching creative writing at Lancaster University. She is a winner of the Betty Trask Award and has been shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize, The Portico Prize and the BBC Best British Short Story Award. Her novels include The Friday Gospels (2013), Fell (2016) and Ghosted (2021). Her most recent book is The Parallel Path (2025), a memoir of care, grief and walking across the North of England.

ACCESS: This is an upstairs venue but there is step free access from Castle Hilll, down the small road next to La Casetta. This entrance is step free. There is an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities. Assistance dogs are allowed. There isn’t an induction loop.
