Eleanor Levin – Historical Women of Lancaster, Lives in Writing, in conversation with Corinna Penniston-Bird
Eleanor Levin’s ‘Historical Women of Lancaster – Diverse Lives’ tour (2023) introduced participants to the fascinating and hugely diverse lives of ten historical women. It was moving, challenging, and it sold out many times.
For International Women’s Day 2025, Litfest has commissioned a fascinating and detailed talk, in which Eleanor will speak about a number of the historical women featured on her tours as well as discussing process, mansplaining and how the tour became the focus for a wellspring of passion for women’s history, creating a sense of community amongst attendees, and revealing an unbroken thread between the lives of historical women and our lives today.
Eleanor Levin is a musician and former BBC Radio presenter. She leads tours for Lancaster Maritime Museum and the Lancaster, Morecambe and District Headteacher Cluster on Lancaster and Transatlantic slavery, and the history of Morecambe. She is a member of the Lancaster Black History Group and the Morecambe Bay Curriculum.
Corinna Peniston-Bird is Professor of Gender and Cultural History in the Department of History at Lancaster University. She has published widely on gender and war, oral history and the significance of space and place.
