‘What Can Fiction Do in a Time of War?’
Litfest is delighted that the 6th Lancaster International Fiction Lecture, a joint venture with the School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University, will be given by the acclaimed Ukrainian writer Andrey Kurkov.
Novelist, journalist and commentator, and Chair of Ukrainian PEN, Andrey Kurkov will talk about the opportunities and obligations of fiction, about language and culture, and especially about the challenge of writing in the language of the occupier – Kurkov writes in Russian – and answer the question: ‘What can fiction do in a time of war?’
Andrey Kurkov was a journalist, prison warder, cameraman and screen-writer and in his spare time self-published his fiction. Then came the international success of Death and the Penguin (2001). His many other novels include The Bickford Fuse, Grey Bees and The Silver Bone, the first in ‘The Kyiv Mysteries’ series. Since the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014 he has also become well known as a commentator on Ukraine for the international media and published three non-fiction books about the war, Diary of an Invasion, Our Daily War and, most recently, Three Years on Fire.
