Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s.
Maybe the New Wave’s most anarchic entry, Věra Chytilová’s absurdist farce follows the misadventures of two brash young women. Believing the world to be “spoiled,” they embark on a series of pranks in which nothing—food, clothes, men, war—is taken seriously. Daisies is an aesthetically and politically adventurous film that’s widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema.

“Screen Dreams a film club at The Dukes for 16-25 year olds that explores unusual, dreamlike cinema that pushes the boundaries of storytelling, style and content. The films I have selected explore themes of feminist rebellion, regional identity, and othering and prejudice, with each screening offering a distinct approach to cinema. Each session includes a screening, discussion and creative activity, contributing to a collaborative film zine of your visual and written responses to the programme. Join us to discover new films, share your thoughts and connect with other film lovers.
I selected Daisies because of its rebellious spirit both in its social themes and its unique visual style.”
