Based on a true story, Surviving Earth follows Vlad, a talented harmonica player who arrived in the UK in the 1990s after fleeing the conflict in Yugoslavia. Vlad, now living in Bristol and working as a counsellor, has brought his roots and love for Balkan music to the city by forming a band with his friends from work.

The band strives for success, but as they do, Vlad is revisited by the traumas of his past life. His carefully rebuilt world starts to fracture, with the hardest hit being his only daughter Maria, the most important person in his life.

Discussion with Sanctuary Cinema Club

Join Sanctuary Cinema Club for a post-screening discussion on Sunday 21 June.

Who are Sanctuary Cinema Club?

Lancaster and Morecambe Sanctuary Cinema Club was set up in 2023 to screen films with, by and for refugee and asylum seeker communities. About 130,000 people live in Lancaster and Morecambe, with about 500 asylum seekers living here at any one point in time, but with different refugee communities in addition to this.

The club is run entirely by volunteers and we’ve shown a film, on average, every couple of months; almost all chosen by asylum seekers and refugees. Our audience is partly made up of asylum seekers and refugees and partly other Lancaster residents, in about equal proportions.

Our aim is to help asylum seekers and refugees feel connected through the club and through the films they choose to watch. We want people to feel recognized, included and supported. We believe the club encourages friendships across groups as it brings together those seeking sanctuary, helping them to mix, improve language skills and find a place of welcome and safety.

If you'd like to find out more or get involved with the club, please contact the Chair – John Chell – on jrchell@aol.com or 07852 762060.
