Since 1945, more than 2,000 nuclear weapons tests have been conducted worldwide. Though the era of atmospheric testing in 1996, the radiation issues remain an active crisis for millions. ‘Our Planet, The People, My Blood’ is a global exposé of the communities devastated by Nuclear Weapons Testing.
These tests were carried out by the USA, France, Russia, China, the UK, India, Pakistan, and North Korea—often on lands far from their own. Documented evidence shows these governments were fully aware of the catastrophic impact on local populations and the environment, yet they proceeded regardless.
Through Alan Owen, the descendant of an Atomic Veteran, we discover just how widely these radiation issues spread. From the soldiers who were forced to witness the bombs, to the Hibakusha who were impacted in Japan, to the Marshallese people whose lands were vaporized by the tests. The issues affecting these communities are wide spread and very little documented in modern history. Alan’s father served at Christmas Island, where he witnessed 24 nuclear tests in just 78 days. The resulting damage to his DNA led to a premature death and a legacy of suffering passed down to his children.
Alan’s brother died of a heart attack at 31; his sister survived three bouts of cancer, two heart attacks and was born blind in her left eye. Alan himself survived a cardiac arrest that left him clinically dead for eight minutes.
Having cheated death, Alan now spearheads a global campaign for justice through his organization, LABRATS. He is currently locked in a high-stakes legal battle with the UK Ministry of Defence to release blood records kept secret for over 70 years. The outcome of this case could provide long-overdue recognition for millions of descendants worldwide.
The injustice felt by all of these communities is unheard of. This scandal goes beyond a national level, to a global one. Numerous governments from multiple countries have done everything in their power to deny compensation and responsibility over the last 80 years, despite documented evidence that these governments knew what they were doing at the time.
Not only have these tests impacted these communities directly, but they have touched every single person alive today through the global spread of fallout. With the current surrounding news of war, and the possibility of Nuclear Weapons Testing restarting once again, this film reveals the truth about an issue that doesn’t just affect these communities, but everyone alive today.
