Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery: A delightfully gothic twist

The game’s afoot. The doughnut needs a doughnut hole. And there’s only one man for the job.

This winter, everyone’s favourite private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns... but who invited him this time? It’s the third installment of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise – and this time, it’s spookier.

Following on from the fraught family drama Knives Out (2019) and the, um... billionaire tech bro drama Glass Onion (2022), Wake Up Dead Man takes a darker turn. When Blanc arrives at the scene of a priest’s murder in a New York church, tensions arise between the parishioners. As most have been driven away by the controversial late priest, the only ones remaining are, expectedly, pretty quirky.

Blanc allies himself with prime suspect Father Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) to unravel the intricate web before them. Blanc’s rational methods are challenged by Duplenticy’s belief in a divine presence, teasing a more supernatural kind of tale. But when are Knives Out mysteries ever straight forward?

While the first two films didn’t shy away from politics, this film is very up-to-date, set in Trump’s second term. The core group is a little microcosm of social tension, and the friction makes for a fitting contemporary Gothic story. Charmingly, the film arrives in the midst of Hollywood’s mini Gothic revival, slap-bang in between Frankenstein and the upcoming Wuthering Heights. But this gory nostalgia ride through haunted halls and locked rooms comes with plenty of modern twists – and Johnson’s signature humour, of course.

With a line-up of suspects including Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, and Jeremy Renner, there must be at least one actor you’re excited to see. Even if you’re a newcomer to the franchise, this standalone will be easy watching for any fan of thriller, comedy, Andrew Scott’s mere presence, or the idea of Daniel Craig having the time of his life with an accent.
