The Outrun – Saoirse Shines Again
Written by Zoe Crombie
In my opinion, Saoirse Ronan is the most consistently brilliant actress of her generation, able to melt into an impressively diverse range of characters while retaining a distinctive, memorable quality. Though she sometimes resembles those who came before, providing glimpses of performers like Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Portman in her work, she is nonetheless an individual, one capable of bringing power and personality to every role. With four Oscar nominations under her belt, including one received when she was only 13 years old for the gut wrenching Atonement, her career is certainly one to keep on watching.
The Outrun, the third feature from director Nora Fingscheidt, is another perfect showcase for Ronan’s talent. This time, the actress takes a turn in the role of Amy Liptrot, a journalist and recovering alcoholic who co-wrote the film and penned the memoir upon which it is based. Set on the beautifully isolated Orkney Islands, used to their full potential by Fingscheidt and cinematographer Yunus Roy Imer, the film provides an insightful portrait of addiction brought to poignant new depths by Ronan’s Oscar worthy performance.
Hitting hard with a realistic depiction of a disease often sensationalised on screen, The Outrun is another triumph for Ronan that’s likely to bring her yet another nomination in next year’s Academy Awards.
Catch The Outrun between the 11th & 16th October
