It Ends With US - An Unmissable Event for Denisons of BookTok
Written by Zoe Crombie
If you’ve been anywhere near TikTok (or Instagram reels for that matter) in the past couple of years, you’re likely to have at least some awareness of what has become known as ‘BookTok’, a movement of mostly women sharing their favourite reads as part of a community. One of the biggest names to emerge from this phenomenon is romance author Colleen Hoover who, love her or hate her, has built an impressive grip on the genre in no small part due to the success of her 2016 novel It Ends With Us – now a major motion picture.
Directed by Justin Baldoni, who also co-stars as the volatile Ryle Kincaid, It Ends With Us tells the story of Lily Bloom and her two loves as she deals with the generational impact of domestic violence. Though Lily and her childhood sweetheart Atlas are played by Blake Lively and Brandon Sklenar as adults, it’s their younger flashback equivalents brought to life by Isabela Ferrer and Alex Neustaedter that often steal the show. Though a rough watch at times, it’s this innocent core that keeps the film from falling entirely into soap opera misery.
With some impressive supporting performances from stage actress Amy Norton and Marcel the Shell herself Jenny Slate, It Ends With Us is a controversial flick that stays standing through moments of sweetness amid the chaos.
It Ends With Us runs from 30th August - 5th September
