In Interview With Chris Lawson
We sat down with our The Snow Queen Director, Chris Lawson, to ask him a few questions...be prepared to have your hearts melted!
What can audiences expect from this years Christmas show, The Snow Queen?
This year at The Dukes, audiences can expect a fun-filled, bold and brave family-friendly production. As a show, it truly has everything you could possibly ask for at Christmas, and is a perfect way to spend time with family and friends of all ages. From mysterious characters to truly magical moments, we’ve gone all out this year and following the huge success of The Wizard of Oz in the Park in the summer, you can expect the highest quality, ambitious theatre, professionally made right here in Lancaster. On top of this, you can see amazing hand stitched costumes, beautiful sets, enchanting storytelling and maybe, just maybe…a little snow.
If you had to sum up the show in 3 words what would they be?
Heart, Magic, Adventure.
What makes directing a show at the Dukes so exciting?
The people – from the team behind the scenes who pour their heart and soul into every detail of making the show and building the very best it can be, to the audiences who embrace and value the hard work the cast clearly put into their performances and appreciate having The Dukes, and a Christmas show on their doorstep. I last directed at The Dukes in 2022 (Beryl) and feel privileged to be back in that rehearsal room. It feels like the Dukes is back to it’s best, listening to audiences, who are the reason we exist – nothing says this more than an auditorium and bar buzzing with over 300 people ready to experience live theatre together at Christmas.
Which character do you relate to the most?
At times Mr Buckler (Gerda’s Dad) as my partner and I navigate raising our big hearted 5 year old! At times Mr Kelpine as I spin many plates on a daily basis at The Dukes. Maybe also the Rose…you’ll need to see the show to see what I mean!
In Stifle, people are encouraged not to wish in order to stay safe from The Snow Queen, what is your Christmas Wish this year?
That the Dukes can bring utter joy and Christmas cheer to audiences from near and far and that we help make special memories for people. Also a Mr Frosty Ice Cream Maker, I’m still carrying the disappointment I held at aged 7…I’m now 40.

The Snow Queen is approaching...bring your gloves, hats, courageous spirits and wonderful hearts from 21st November to 31st December.
