Four Letters of Love - Happenstance Romance

Four Letters of Love - Happenstance Romance

Written by Dr. Zoe Crombie

Is romance dead in modern cinema? Obviously, we’re unlikely to see it return to the heights of the classical heyday where the plots that paired the brightest onscreen stars reigned supreme, but its presence in many major releases now (while still compulsory to some extent) is little more than an afterthought. When such films do release, they’re rarely blockbusters, but that doesn’t mean that lovers of love have been left completely bereft.

Based on the bestselling novel by Niall Williams, with a screenplay adaptation from the author himself, Four Letters of Love is a sweet and sincere romance that contemplates classic themes of fate and longing. Directed by filmmaker of diverse talents Polly Steele, the woman behind thriller Let Me Go and documentary The Mountain Within Me, the film follows two young would-be lovers and their families. However, while the plot ostensibly revolves around the pair and whether their destinies will intertwine, it’s Helena Bonham Carter, Pierce Brosnan, and Gabriel Byrne as the older generation who have proved to be the real audience draw.

If you’re a hopeless romantic needing a cinematic fix amid a summer of superheroes and horror releases, Four Letters of Love is what you’re looking for – especially with a cast like this.
