What’s behind the play? What inspired the writer? And what can a story tell us about the world we live in?
Lunchtime Lectures is a new series of relaxed, lively sessions exploring the ideas, histories, writers and themes behind some of the literary and theatrical works we know and love.
Led by academics and subject specialists, these aren't your traditional lectures. They're informal, interactive and designed to spark conversation, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, share your thoughts and discover something new.
Running from 11am–1pm in the Dukes Gallery space, each session gives you time to explore a fascinating subject before having the option to stay for lunch and continue the conversation with fellow attendees.
Whether you're a theatregoer or just curious to learn something new, you're more than welcome to join.
Sessions are designed to be inclusive. Please let us know in advance if you have any access needs so that we can make the necessary adjustments.
Wednesday 11 November 2026: Kafka
Kafka’s The Metamorphosis
Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung) written in 1912 begins with an iconic opening: Gregor Samsa wakes to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin." But how do we interpret a story like this? How do our own experiences shape what we see, and how far can an interpretation go before it loses its footing?
In this relaxed two-hour workshop, Dr. Laura Zambianchi will guide participants through the opening of The Metamorphosis. Together, you will explore its language and imagery alongside aspects of Kafka’s life and writing and some of the very different ways in which the story has been interpreted. The emphasis will be not on finding the “right” answer, but on discovering how we can develop, question and test our own interpretations.
No previous knowledge of Kafka is needed. The text will be studied in English with occasional references to the original German to highlight interesting linguistic nuances. The session will be interactive, but participation is entirely up to you. You can contribute ideas, interpretations and questions, or simply have a coffee and listen – both are equally welcome.
Dr Laura Zambianchi is a researcher, writer and educator with a background in languages, literature and education. She taught languages at the Adult College in Lancaster before moving her classes and workshops to the Chapel, where she ran a series of informal sessions exploring literature with adult learners. Laura holds a PhD in Education (University of Lancashire) and is currently translating and writing commentaries on two plays at the University of East Anglia. She writes and develops educational materials, and continues to teach and speak about literature and interpretation in academic and public settings.
