Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca, in a translation by Ted Hughes.
“You think time heals and that walls shut away, but it’s not true, it’s not true. When things have pierced to the centre, nobody can pull them out.” - Leonardo
“There’s a great scream always fighting its way up. I have to smother it and shove it back down.” - Mother
In Federico Garcia Lorca’s Spanish tragedy (Bodas de Sangre) set in a tight knit 1930’s Andalusian farming community, two wealthy landowning families hope to ensure the continuation of their lines by marrying off a nameless Bride and Bridegroom.
A materialistic father. A distrustful Mother. The neighbour’s omens. A trembling bride torn between family duty and her inescapable passion for a married man. Premonitions of the coming revenge tragedy abound from the outset.
Lorca’s poetic and surreal fable of longing and desire amid destructive societal norms seems to have prophesied his untimely demise; his own at the hands of Nationalist forces at the very start of the Spanish Civil War; the characters' at the hands of a vengeful moon who will warm her cheeks with their blood.
