In post WWI Copenhagen, Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne), a young seamstress, is struggling to survive on her own since her husband was declared missing in action. She meets Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a charismatic sweet-shop owner.
Chilling and macabre, this intense crime drama screened in competition in Cannes. Part gruesome fairy tale and part gothic nightmare, it is loosely based on an infamous Danish serial-killer case. With nods to Fritz Lang, Carl Dreyer and Tod Browning, The Girl with the Needle is also visually stunning, thanks to Michał Dymek’s sumptuous black-and-white cinematography. The two wonderful performances at the heart of the film powerfully explore the dangerous choices so often faced by women on the fringes of society.
