Mark Jenkin’s Bait (2019) is an experimental drama which explores class tension and identity in post-Brexit Britain.
Martin Ward is a cove fisherman, without a boat. His brother Steven has re-purposed their father’s vessel as a tourist tripper, driving a wedge between the brothers. With their childhood home now a get-away for London money, Martin is displaced to the estate above the picturesque harbour. As his struggle to restore the family to their traditional place creates increasing friction with tourists and locals alike, a tragedy at the heart of the family changes his world.
Bait won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Shot on hand-processed black-and-white 16mm film and entirely post-dubbed in sound, the film explores modern concerns through textures of the past.

Screen Dreams Cinema Club
Screen Dreams Screenings are open to eveyone.
The film club for 16-25 year olds will take place straight after the screenings in the gallery.
“Screen Dreams a film club at The Dukes for 16-25 year olds that explores unusual, dreamlike cinema that pushes the boundaries of storytelling, style and content. The films I have selected explore themes of feminist rebellion, regional identity, and othering and prejudice, with each screening offering a distinct approach to cinema. Each session includes a screening, discussion and creative activity, contributing to a collaborative film zine of your visual and written responses to the programme. Join us to discover new films, share your thoughts and connect with other film lovers.
I have chosen this film because I love the way Jenkin’s personal filmmaking style mirrors and communicates the themes explored.””
