Join us to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Hammer Films with this talk and screening.
Considered one of Hammer’s best films, The Devil Rides Out follows the debonair Duc de Richleau who has been trusted with the care of his deceased friend’s son, Simon Aron. The Duc discovers that the young man has been seduced into joining a Satanic cult headed by the diabolic Mocata, who is intent on making Simon one of the Devil’s disciples.
The screening will be preceded by a short talk by Dr Kieran Foster, author of Hammer Goes to Hell: The House of Horror’s Unmade Films. While The Devil Rides Out shows Hammer firing creatively and commercially on all cylinders, the following decade at the company would be one of huge upheaval. This led to many of Hammer’s most enticing projects, from Loch Ness Monster films to ‘Dracula in India’ project, never making it to the screen. This talk will outline some of these fascinating projects, as well as noting other Dennis Wheatley adaptations from Hammer that, unlike The Devil Rides Out, were consigned to development hell.
