My Time at the Dukes - Bethan Williamson

During my final year at Lancaster University studying ‘English Language in the Media’, I undertook a FASS exclusive internship at The Dukes as their ‘Marketing and Communications Assistant’. As someone enthusiastic about the arts, especially musical theatre, and with a passion and interest in marketing, this opportunity felt like the perfect introduction to professional marketing and communication.

Prior to my internship, I had some experience within the digital communications and marketing sector, but working at The Dukes was my first full experience in the field, and I absolutely loved it.

Arriving at work, settling into my own desk, and being surrounded by a talented group of marketing professionals felt both stimulating and exciting. I was guided by the brilliant and creative Marketing Department, including the Head of Marketing & Communications, Marketing & Communications Officer , and the Audience Development & Data Manager, all of whom were a friendly team who happily answered the many questions I had.

From social media and emails to IT software and press releases, there was so much to learn and do. I was also able to join meetings beyond marketing, including ones for cinema and programming, which broadened my understandings of the inner workings of The Dukes .I have expanded my expertise and skills, gaining transferable skills which have enhanced my CV for future opportunities.

If you're a Lancaster University student who loves the arts, I'd highly recommend an internship at The Dukes! (There are not many workplaces where you can hear a live sound check while working or casually pass actors in the corridor!)

The experiences I gained at The Dukes will stay with me long after I leave its theatre doors.- Thank you all!
