A creative catalyst
The Dukes is a catalyst space: a facilitator for artists to create, providing them with the resources, skills and space to develop their work and practice. The Dukes places artists centrally and we ensure our talent development programmes are designed, informed and delivered by artists.
Creative Network Launch Event
Calling all Practitioners, Teachers and Creatives!
Join us at The Dukes for the launch of our new Creative Network, aiming to unite local artists and educators in a safe and creative space for discussions and sharing around themes of creative learning practice. To mark the launch of the network, we are thrilled to be working in conjunction with Chickenshed Theatre who will be joining us from London to run a practical and interactive session looking at playful learning and exploration without parameters.
“Chickenshed is a theatre company for absolutely everyone. For fifty years, we’ve created bold and beautiful work from our limitless belief in each other. The Tales from the Shed team are thrilled to be attending The Dukes in January 2026, as part of the Creative Network launch for local artists. In this two-hour session, we'll be looking at play as a tool for creating and exploring, as well as generating theatre with no boundaries for young audiences” (Chickenshed).
There are limited places for this FREE training and networking opportunity so don’t miss out and book today!
Associate Artists
Our Associate Artists are new, mid-career or established artists and companies who are developing and making theatrical work in the North West of the UK. Over a period of 18 months, we at The Dukes support those artists to reach their goals and aspirations.
What is the Associate Artist Programme?
Within our Talent Development programme, The Dukes’ ambition is for our venue to be known in the North West as a welcome hub for artists to collaborate and stretch their creative muscles. The Dukes is committed to providing support to our selected Associate Artists, who are at varying stages of their career, with the hopes of establishing a creative, empowered and balanced partnership. We also wish to bring artists together, so they too can expand their working relationships.
The Associate Artist Programme provides support such as:
- Free rehearsal space
 - Programming opportunities
 - Professional advice
 - Technical and Marketing advice and support
 - Hot-desking

The Dukes also offers advocacy within Venues North and other relevant networks and events.

Applications are currently closed.
Lancaster Playwriting Prize is back for another year! We are seeking submissions for Lancaster Playwriting Prize 2025 from writers based in Lancashire and the North-West.
The competition is open to entrants living or learning in Lancashire/North-West UK and must be 18+ years of age. The top three submissions will receive a rehearsed public reading of a 15-20 minute section of their work on 28th March 2025. Runners up will receive £250 each and the winner will receive £1000 cash prize and a trophy.
The theatre organises the competition alongside Lancaster University.
Each year the competition has a different writing theme and this year the theme is Gothic. The first was aimed at ethnically-diverse writers, while subsequent ones have covered unproduced writers over 55; LGBTQAI+ writers and deaf, disabled or neurodiverse writers.
The submitted scripts can be full length (long or short) plays and must have a maximum of 4 cast members. If your play exceeds 15-20 minutes in length, a section of your play will be performed if you are shortlisted.
The Dukes CEO Chris Lawson says: “As Lancaster’s only professional producing theatre, we are pleased to reaffirm our commitment to new writing across the region. This is a fantastic opportunity for writers at any stage of their career to work with us in the development of their ideas and stories which need to be heard”
Please note: all submissions will be acknowledged, although due to the expected volume we will receive, feedback will only be given to finalists.
